Introduction

        Key Laboratory of Advanced Control and Optimization for Chemical Processes of Ministry of Education (hereinafter referred to as “Laboratory”) was established with the approval from the Ministry of Education in 2008. On June 16, 2009, the laboratory construction plan passed the feasibility study by the expert group organized by Science and Technology Division of the Ministry of Education. On August 25, 2011, the laboratory establishment project successfully passed inspection and acceptance of the expert group organized by Science and Technology Division of the Ministry of Education.
        East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST) that this Laboratory is relying on has established a major of Chemical Process Automation for discipline of “Control Science and Engineering” (in 1958), and the university began to enroll postgraduate for master degree in 1962. ECUST was the first-batch univeristy with the right of granting doctor’s degree for the major of “industrial automation” approved by Academic Degree Commission of the State Council (in 1981). From the second session (1985) on, ECUST has been being member organization of automatic control discipline appraisal group of Academic Degree Commission of the State Council. In 2001, a postdoctoral research station of “Control Science and Engineering” was approved to be established. In 2003, Level 1 discipline point for awarding doctor’s degree of “Control Science and Engineering” was established. In 2007, “Control Theory and Control Engineering” was approved as a national key discipline and that in Shanghai. In 2008, “Key Laboratory of Advanced Control and Optimization for Chemical Processes of Ministry of Education” was approved to be established.
        Supported by national “211 project” and “985 project” advantage discipline innovation platform, focusing on international leading science & technology, great demand of intelligent manufacturing for sustainable development of petroleum and chemical industry and aiming at system integration optimization control problem in high-efficient utilization of energy and resources in the chemical production process, the Laboratory will carry out innovation research in foundations, application foundations and achievement transformation, form research fields with characteristics and advantages and obtain a batch of typical research achievements and core patent technologies that has great influence at home and abroad, which generate prominent economic and social benefits. This Laboratory has been committed to reserve of forward-looking theory and technology to make the petroleum and chemical process automation technology of China reach world advanced level, and make the Laboratory become an important base for talents cultivation, scientific research and achievements transformation, leading the country and having international influence in this field.
        At present, the Laboratory has over 40 scientific researchers, including: Winners of National Science Foundation for Outstanding Youth, Specially-appointed Professors and Visiting Professors for Changjiang Scholars, National 973 Chief Scientists, Winners of Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Prize for Scientific and Technological Innovation, National Class Candidates for New Century Talents Project, national young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contribution, winners of National Science Foundation for Excellent Youth, Cross-century and New Century Excellent Talents of the Ministry of Education, scientific elites from Shanghai, discipline leaders from Shanghai, Shanghai Shuguang Scholars and a batch of excellent academic leaders. The current floor area of Laboratory is over 3,000 m2, equipped with a batch of advanced instruments and equipment and experimental platform with certain scale. The total value of instruments and equipment is over 30 million yuan.
